Larry Gus
Panagiotis Melidis has been writing music as Larry Gus since 2006.
His music incorporates sample-based constructions and psychedelic pop melodies that merge into an infinite density of layers and polyrhythms. He soon became known for his hyperactive and chaotic improvised performances that combine vocals, drums, and electronics with self-deprecating comic banter.
He trained and has worked as a computer engineer, undertaking postgraduate studies at the Music Technology Group in Barcelona (The Reactable, Freesound, and more), and it is this technical background he uses to apply interdisciplinary approaches to his creative and production processes. For example, “Years Not Living” – his first release on DFA Records – was a cycle of songs directly inspired by the algorithmic constraints applied by Georges Perec in his novel “La Vie mode d’emploi” (“Life: A User’s Manual”).
To date, he has released seven albums (four of them on DFA Records), played at various festivals across the globe (Sónar Barcelona / Reykjavík, Fauna Primavera, Lowlands, Best Kept Secret, Moogfest, Nuits Sonores, Pukkelpop), and is a Red Bull Music Academy alumni (Tokyo 2014). His music and personal life were also the subject of a documentary made by Vasilis Katsoupis – “My Friend Larry Gus” (2015).
He lives and works in Athens, where he collaborates with choreographers, directors, architects, composers, and others.
