A freelance composer, Nicolas Tzortzis was born in Athens in 1978, and has lived in Paris since 2002. His music is characterized by a distinctive energy, complex audiovisual arrangements, the seamless incorporation of extra-musical elements, and the presence of technology. His inspirations include philosophy, politics, pop culture, sports, and surrealism.

A student of Georges Aperghis’s at the Hochschule der Kunste in Bern, Switzerland, Tzortzis has kept in close contact with his mentor ever since, and the two are currently in the process of compiling a book of interviews for Exandas Publications.

Tzortzis was selected for CURSUS 1 and 2 in composition and computer music at IRCAM, and has been Artist-in-Residence at Herrenhaus Edenkoben and Villa Ruffieux; a Fulbright visiting scholar at UC Berkeley; and a visiting artist at Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany.

The recipient of 23 awards and 35 distinctions at national and international composition competitions, his immediate future plans include the release of a CD of original work with Das Neue Ensemble, as well as the composition of a piece commissioned by Radio France.

His music has been performed in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America.
