Miya Masaoka

Miya Masaoka resides in New York City and is a classically trained musician, composer and sound/installation artist.

As a composer, her works explore spatiality, acoustics, traditional Asian musics and instruments, recorded “real” sounds and computer synthesized sound. She has been commissioned by Bang on a Can, Volti, The San Francisco Chorale Society, So Percussion, Rova Saxophone Quartet, Kathleen Supove, BBC and Lines Ballet.

Her work has been presented throughout the world, including Venice Biennale 2004, the Miller Theater, NYC, Merkin Hall, V2 (Rotterdam), Ircam, (Paris), KunstRadio (Vienna), Radio Breman (Germany).

As a kotoist, she has performed with the Berkeley Symphony, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Coleman, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Cecil Taylor, Fred Frith, Christian Wolff, Henry Brandt, Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman, Vijay Iyer and Dr. L. Subramaniam.

She has received the Alpert Arts Award and the Asian Cultural Council Japanese Fellowship, and currently teaches at New York University and Bard College.
