Lykourgos Porfyris
Lykourgos Porfyris (b. 1988, Athens) is a visual artist and disability/queer activist, currently living and working between Oslo and Athens. Porfyris’ practice engages with the production of new mythologies and legends to replace the conservative ones that have been rendered obsolete. His stories are misinterpreting big mainstream narratives that tend to embrace the victories of the heroes, transforming them into alternative fictions that celebrate the failures of the losers. The main purpose of Porfyris’ projects is to subvert the ableist masculine stereotype of the thriving man. His works have been shown in the 6th Athens Biennale, Akershus Kunstsenter (Lillestrøm, Norway), Arnolfini Gallery (Bristol), Freud Museum (London), Fylkingen (Stockholm), DIVADLO X1O (Prague), and Norway’s National Gallery. In 2022, he completed his 4-year research project “The Hyper Whites” at the BO Association of Visual Artists in Oslo, Norway.
Lykourgos Porfyris is a participant of the Tailor-Made Residencies program for 2023-24.
