Carmine-Emanuele Cella

The composer Carmine-Emanuele Cella (b. 1976), after his music studies (piano, computer music, composition) at the Conservatory of Pesaro, Italy, studied philosophy and mathematics at the University of Bologna. His doctoral thesis in mathematical logic deals with the symbolic representations of music. Since then, he follows a fourfold career, as a composer, pianist (accompanist and jazz pianist), educator and researcher (focusing on the relationship between music and mathematics).

From 2007 to 2009 he was a researcher at IRCAM, in the sound analysis/synthesis team. During the period 2015-2016, he conducted researches in applied mathematics, in the context of his post-doctoral research with Stéphane Mallat at the École Normale Supérieure (Paris). In 2016, he was a composer in residence at the American Academy in Rome. Since January 2019, he is an Assistant Professor at CNMAT (Center for New Music and Audio Technologies) at the University of Berkeley, California.
