Calliope Tsoupaki’s music (Piraeus, 1963) is characterized by “timeless beauty, vitality and a sense of urgency.” She deploys elements of ancient and contemporary, Greek and Middle Eastern music, combining them in a unique, personal composing style. She has composed over 100 works for soloists, ensembles, orchestras, choirs, dance, theater, opera performances and multi-sensory shows, often including non-European musical instruments. She has worked with Pierre Audi, Markus Stenz, Jordi Savall, Frances-Marie Uitti, the ensembles Ergon, Neue Vocalisten Stuttgart, Asko|Schönberg, and major orchestras, among others.

Since 1988, she lives in the Netherlands and teaches composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In November 2018, she was awarded the title “Composer Laureate of the Netherlands” for two years. In this context, she believes that her most important mission is “to make the art of the composer more visible to a wider audience.”
