Alexander Zeldin

Alexander Zeldin is a writer and director for theatre and film. Until 2011 he had made work in South Korea, the Middle East, Russia, and at the Naples Festival. Between 2011-2014 he developed projects as a teacher at East 15, while working as an assistant director to Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne.

His critically acclaimed play “Beyond Caring” had its world premiere at The Yard in London in 2014, before transferring to the National Theatre’s Temporary Theatre in 2015. “Beyond Caring” toured the UK and a new US version opened in Chicago in April 2017, re-developed by Zeldin and produced by Lookingglass Theatre Company in conjunction with David Schwimmer’s company Dark Harbor Stories.

In 2015 Zeldin was the recipient of the Quercus Trust Award and was appointed Associate Director at Birmingham Repertory Theatre. His play “Love” opened at London’s National Theatre in December 2016, before transferring to Birmingham Rep. In 2018, “Love” was presented as part of Festival d'Automne à Paris by Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe and, in the same year, was made into a film by the BBC and Cuba Pictures.

In 2017, he was named Artist in Residence at the National Theatre and, in 2018, was the winner of the Arts Foundation 25th anniversary Fellowship for Literature. “Faith, Hope and Charity” formed the third and final part of “The Inequalities” trilogy and opened to widespread acclaim at the National Theatre in 2019, where he is now Associate Director. He is also Associate Director at Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe, Paris; Centre Dramatique National de Normandie-Rouen; and Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg. Zeldin’s first production in French, “Une mort dans la famille”, opened at Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe’s Ateliers Berthier in February 2022 and toured in 2022-2023. A German version of “Beyond Caring”, directed by Zeldin, opened at the Schaubühne in Berlin in April 2022.

In 2020, Zeldin formed his own theatre company – A Zeldin Company – to produce his work and tour it internationally. “Faith, Hope and Charity” and “Love” have toured to sixteen European cities and “Love” was presented at the Park Avenue Armory in New York in February 2023, garnering five Drama Desk nominations. In 2023, A Zeldin Company produced the director’s most recent production, “The Confessions” which was presented in London, Paris, Vienna, Avignon, Athens, Barcelona, Geneva, Liége, and Clermont-Ferrand and will continue to tour in 2024.
