Open Call | Onassis New Choreographers Festival 8
Now it’s your move
When everything seems to have stopped, what is it that moves you, physically and emotionally? Motion towards, approaches to, a movement for a new kind of coming together. This is the driving force behind our Open Call for Onassis New Choreographers 8, a festival that never stops tracing the steps taken by new artists. Submit your proposals until 14.12.2020.
Onassis Stegi is calling on choreographers, dancers, dramaturgs, researchers, and performers from the broader spectrum of contemporary dance and performance to submit proposals for works of dance expression, choreography, movement, and movement practice at every level: form, esthetics, and content. Because when the circumstances around us upend everything we once took as given, it’s on us to look anew at how we operate, how we create, and how we “embrace” one another in inner ways, or, to put it another way: how we can creatively move beyond the limits imposed by our circumstances? To dance is to completely reformulate numerous things: what moves you in physical, shared, and emotional ways, what motivates you, and what thrusts you beyond everything you’ve ever known.
Application submission deadline: 14.12.2020. Submit now
There is only one constraint: all proposed works must have the potential to be presented digitally, and all health measures in force during their creation must be met in full.
This year’s festival seeks to stimulate the creation of artistic rationales and actions that broaden choreographic practice and form new analytical standpoints on the distinctions between public and private, and on what dance can do for us all.
Within this framework, we are seeking short-form works (10’–30’) which, at their core, are attempting to find new ways, means, and methods for the creation of choreography and dance within our current socially distanced settings, but that nevertheless aim for spiritual and social closeness. Dance works and choreographies on the need for communication (thematic) and/or the exploration of new kinds of communication (methodology) through dance, or works that use new technologies to eliminate the true distances between us, creating new dance perspectives and practices in the process.
Submitted works can take any digital form (videos, Zoom performances, sketches, photo essays, diary notes, interactive digital projects, and so on).
How can we produce dance works in socially distanced settings? What does it mean to dance when there are no audiences or other dancers physically there with you (physical distancing)? How can dancing bodies enter into dialog with one another, even from afar, when the need and desire to be close together is stronger than ever? How can dance enter into discourse with space, and with the public and private body?
The works may be screened on the Onassis Foundation YouTube Channel and/or at a public venue. The works must not have been presented anywhere else. All health measures in force during the production of these works must be met in full.
