For the eleventh year running, the Onassis Foundation is supporting the Iris Awards, its gaze fixed firmly on the future of Greek cinema. The 12th Hellenic Film Academy Awards are to be held live in person at the Alsos Theater in Athens, and streamed live on the Onassis Channel on YouTube.
This year, Greek cinema proved that even in the most difficult of circumstances, it always finds ways to live on and evolve, journeying to festivals around the world. 2020 saw 121 films submitted as contenders for the 12th Hellenic Film Academy Iris Awards – an impressive number given the pandemic.
Adopting “Every film is an act of rebellion” as its rallying cry, the 12th Iris Awards Ceremony is being held live in person at the Alsos Theater and streamed live on the Onassis Channel on YouTube. This year’s nominees include “Ballad for a Pierced Heart” directed by Yannis Economides, co-produced by Onassis Culture, and the documentary “Birds (or How To Be One)” by Babis Makridis, produced by the Onassis Foundation.

New Worlds. New Films.
The Onassis Foundation supports Greek cinema, unleashing the talent and potential of young filmmakers. It is embracing the creative process, research approaches, and artistic development by offering fellowships to artists from the world of cinema. Through the production of films, it is pursuing lasting investment in fresh talent and powerful storytelling, from Vasilis Kekatos and Evi Kalogeropoulou to Yorgos Zois and Romain Gavras. And through partnerships and a curated film program, it is screening select features and shorts by daring experimental artists who are redefining what cinema means, thus opening them up to broader audiences.
