The Onassis Scholars’ Association joins and furthers the public discourse on sustainable development
The extensive Onassis Scholars’ family sets its sights once more on the future.
As part of the public discourse on sustainable development, and in line with the Onassis Foundation’s major objectives regarding the achievement of societal, economic, and environmental sustainability, the Onassis Scholars’ Association organized a series of experiential workshops for its members in July 2020, in collaboration with “Organization Earth”, which uses non-conventional experiential education techniques to help develop environmental and social intelligence.
One hundred participants were trained in the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals – learning how to live and consume with a smaller environmental footprint – and were taken on a tour round a 25-acre environmental park. Participants also took part in a “Communal Kitchen”, helping to prepare food that was later distributed by “Organization Earth” to those in society who need it most.
The Onassis Foundation’s scholarship program is founded on the deep-seated belief that social progress is actuated collectively; on the transformative power of society’s unleashed potential, which in turn drives further societal development; on providing open access to educational opportunities and knowledge, for the benefit of as many people as possible; and on making an investment in excellence, an added value that at some point feeds back into society.
In light of the Association’s core mission to function as a forum where members can present their work, and where they can connect both with one another and with the Foundation, the Association actively pursues a scientific, cultural, intellectual, and artistic agenda. To date, it has involved itself heavily in the organization of conferences and lectures, scientific and cultural events, and talks given by distinguished guest speakers from around the world.
