The School of Infinite Rehearsals

Movements I-IV

An Onassis AiR edition documenting the research of an interdisciplinary group of artists, editors and designers that worked together in Greece during the global pandemic.

Conceived as a collective research program of Onassis AiR, “The School of Infinite Rehearsals” brings together an interdisciplinary group of participants to exchange knowledge and practices on specific research topics we find urgent to address and further explore together. As an outcome of “The School of Infinite Rehearsals 2020-21”, the four-volume publication assembles the ideas and inquiries that emerged as part of the collective research. Each book is collectively authored by the respective participants of Movements I-IV, including commissioned texts and artworks by other contributors. Four different Athenian creative studios were invited to design each book.

Onassis AiR is an (inter)national artistic research residency program established by the Onassis Foundation in 2019. Located in the center of Athens, the program grounds its mission in supporting artistic process, towards a less product-obsessed arts ecosystem.

The School of Infinite Rehearsals, Movement I – Transpirings

“Transpirings” unfolds in two sections: PARATEXT and INFRATEXT. INFRATEXT is a continuous conversation that functions as a narrated journey to the internal devices and principles guiding Movement I’s collective research at Onassis AiR. While INFRATEXT unfolds — an insight into Movement I’s processes of thinking and acting — PARATEXT is there to contextualize it and bring it closer to the possibility of a (national) identity in a constant state of doubt and critique.

The School of Infinite Rehearsals, Movement II – Scored Invocations

During a COVID-related lockdown, in the isolated house of Onassis AiR in Athens, a group of people were inhibited to spend six weeks together, meeting daily and researching themes related to identities. Rather than a result or a documentation of this process, “Scored Invocations” is exactly what its title implies: a carefully curated compilation of enigmatic spells, alchemical reactions, self-evident interpellations, and audacious reflections that appeal to the serendipitous mechanics of a conviviality in the making.

The School of Infinite Rehearsals, Movement III – Confluences

“Confluences” is a collection of texts and images that record moments of thinking around water(s). The book contains ideas that arose from the group’s time together and developed through encounters with others and otherness along the way. The book contributors contemplate on the different qualities of water, creating a web of reflections on it as a medium, a method, and a practice of relating to ourselves and the more-than-human world.

The School of Infinite Rehearsals, Movement IV – While We’re Together

Structured as a series of prompts and responses, “While We're Together” conveys one group's practices of gathering amidst cascading failures around the globe. The book offers potential forms of remedy and repair through building collaborative relations between each other and with more-than-human worlds. These practices include evolving into cephalopods, listening to plants, foraging a meal, searching for centaurs, shapeshifting into monsters, and finally, sealing our rewilded relations with a spell.
