Introduction
Where do the borders lie that delimit one song genre from another? How much can the orchestration change a song? How much does the feel of a song depend on the performance? For the third consecutive year, The Hellenic Project continues its musical experimentations with a performance of “A Different Winter Journey”.
We see the "Transformations" cycle as an opportunity to try out different ideas and ways of listening to new pieces and works from the contemporary repertoire free of all restraints and restrictions.
The subject of our experiment is Franz Schubert's emblematic song cycle, "Winterreise", musical settings for poems by Wilhelm Müller. The lieder cycle was translated into Greek by Dionysis Kapsalis and premiered in November 2015. Subsequently, the translated poems were set to music in three separate song cycles by Nikos Xydakis, Dimitris Papadimitriou and Tasos Rossopoulos, respectively, and performed under the title "A Winter Journey: Three routes" in March 2016.
We will now be bringing this series of "Transformations" to a close with an experiment in the opposite direction. In "A Different Winter Journey", the Greek composers' songs, "transformed" for piano and voice along with several of Schubert's own lieder, will be performed by Myrsini Margariti (soprano) and Dionysios Sourbis (baritone), accompanied by Dimitris Giakas on piano.
