Reviews | “Bacchae”

Nikos Xenios
Aris Biniaris left the audience of the Onassis Stegi in awe, with an anything but conventional version of Euripides’ Bacchae, adapted by Yorgos Chimonas’ translation. (…) An impressive ensemble, superbly and ably coordinated by a firm directorial hand. Aris Biniaris, departing from Euripides’ personal spectrum for the world, comments on the timeless value of ecstasy and pronounces the epilogue of the era of Pentheus and mourning, while his absolutely original and fascinating reading of the Bacchae turns the focus of the modern spectator on the path of introspection.

Aris Biniaris did what he described before the show in his interviews: an ancient tragedy as a rock show. In fact, he did something more, he dug deeper and linked the live wires that fuel what tragedy is and what rock is.

A concert-like version of Bacchae with live music moving through the electrified areas of rock and punk, with god Dionysus turning into a rock star on mic, evoking the vocal shouts of Pavlos Sidiropoulos and Giannis Aggelakas.

For 67 minutes, we watched something magical and whole, something contemporary and inspired, something founded on solid ground and flying towards the new.

I don’t wish to exaggerate but, having seen all the Greek performances of “Bacchae” after 1970, I believe that this one, by Aris Biniaris, is the best. You should definitely watch it!

A truly groundbreaking performance of Euripides’ Bacchae by the director Aris Biniaris and an amazing cast. I would also like to point out the great original music of Victor Couloumbis and Panos Sardelis.

It is a fervently applauded indisputable artistic success. A remarkably thoughtful approach to the fundamentals of tragedy.

The image which emanated from the performance was that of a worldly ritual, whose Church kindly reflected the fervor of the first believers, scenically performing their memory. And this new Church adapted the sonic “dramaturgy” of Bacchae into punk-rock and heavy metal energy, executing accordingly the subversive aberration of Dionysus (who we shall not forget that becomes the new institutional State).

Investigative, pulsating and captivating, the Bacchae directed by Aris Biniaris seek the theatrical experience through the energy of movement, music and symbolism.

Rock anthem to Dionysus, dance theater and ancient tragedy in perfect harmony and with absolute respect for the ancient text. Or rather a ritual on stage?
