Introduction

Why do people fall silent? Persa Stamatopoulou puts the experience of silence on stage.

Persa Stamatopoulou, a choreographer who has been breaking new ground in contemporary Greek dance for two decades now, presents her latest work, “Silence”, along with the company she heads. The choreographer perceives silence as release and asks herself this: why do people fall silent? Have they suffered some sort of shock? Do they withdraw for the sake of self-preservation, or is a revolution brewing in the body and the gaze?

Persa Stamatopoulou seeks to translate these questions into movement and to explore the experience of silence on stage: before and after the clash, before and after the fall, before and after the decision, before and after the trauma.

Amidst bodies, materials and Coti K.’s sound landscapes, silence emerges both as a means of observing the Other and as a locus for introspection and self-reformation. The audience is invited to participate in the journey through its own active silence.
