A lecture about a cultural relic of national importance: Rigas Velestinlis’s “Charta (Map) of Greece.”
Photo: Yiannis Soulis
Rigas' Charta is definitely the best-known map of Greece and almost the only one to have given rise to a commentary.
The sheer audacity of the move to publish a map of Greece after centuries of cartographic silence, its monumental size and visual complexity, its links to Rigas' patriotic and revolutionary activities, and its maker's martyrish death just months after its completion, they all all make Rigas' Charta a national treasure.
