Mediterranean Futures by Movement Radio
Inspired by the past. Tuned in the future.

Movement Radio presents Mediterranean Futures. Musicians, DJs, artists, and thinkers from across the Mediterranean basin brought together on Onassis Stegi’s online international radio station. A five-day radio festival constantly seeking out geographic links and alternative chronologies via the region’s cultures, ideas, and peoples.
The festival features daily mixes specially commissioned from such musicians and DJs as Deena Abdelwahed, Azu Tiwaline, Bill Kouligas, Ice_Eyes, and Muqata’a, among many others; a discussion with the theorist Iain Chambers on his landmark book “Mediterranean Crossings”, published by the Duke University Press; contemporary electronic music from the Mediterranean basin; and tribute programs honoring Umm Kulthum, Jani Christou, Pascal Comelade, and others.
Drawing inspiration from the notion of cross-border crossings between music genres, geographical borders, and generations, the festival will spotlight interconnections between music, culture, and politics from across the broader area. Casting doubt on official historical chronicles, it will reveal hidden stories and narratives through sound, bringing our collective memories of the past to the surface in order to forge a new link to the future by means of our shared experiences.
Mediterranean Futures is launching Movement Radio’s new season with a series of events focused on the music and cultures of the Mediterranean basin.
Mediterranean Futures will include music drawn from every diverse thread woven through the Mediterranean basin’s aural tapestry. Futuristic, dance-oriented bass music, and deconstructed club and hip-hop music with traditional influences; music from the Balkans that takes a contemporary approach by using alternative pitches and distortions; and special tributes to traditional idiomatic forms and historic figures, including Algerian rai, Moroccan gnawa, Pascal Comelade, Jani Christou, and Umm Kulthum.
All programming is broadcast live on www.movement.radio before being made available as part of the station’s online program archive.
