Connecting New Media (P)arts | EMAP Networking Conference | A one-day networking conference in Athens about new media art

What does it mean to produce and distribute digital and hybrid media works? What are the key challenges and opportunities? Does it affect the creative process and how is it affected by it? What is a favorable environment for producing and disseminating art? What is the role of networks, residency programs, co-productions and communities? How are platforms changing the game of distribution?

Onassis Stegi, as part of the EMAP network, is opening a discussion on the question of how value chains are developed and disrupted around the process of creating media works: as the very definition of what constitutes a media work constantly shifts, and the creators are increasingly enmeshed in an omnipresent technological environment, the logistics, economics, and business practices that envelope the creative process are of paramount importance for critically appreciating the culture we are producing. Aiming at fostering the conditions for the creation of impactful and critical media Art, we approach media works as performative objects that are fundamentally intertwined not just with their production context but also with their dissemination pathways and the creative and institutional context within which they are created: a media work comes into existence far before it is created, and it will exist for a long time after its digital or material incarnation. What can we learn from it?

The conference will bring together representatives from Greek and international arts organizations and production houses, as well as artists, researchers, and curators in order to exchange insights, perspectives, and tools related to the production, distribution, research, and development of new media arts.

The European Media Art Platform (EMAP) is the largest international platform for residencies of emerging European media artists, connecting 15 leading European cultural institutions and organizations dealing with media art as well as over 80 partners, including renowned festivals, laboratories, and institutions that focus on digital arts, robotics, bio art, video, and other forms of media art. A partnership of cultural institutions aiming to support up-and-coming media artists in order to create new works.
