Introduction
Three impressive dance suites from baroque operas alternating with première of new works from three leading Greek composers.
The Camerata brings the musical past and present together in a unique program combining outgoing baroque ballet music from operas staged in the fairytale Paris of the 18th century with music by three leading Greek composers of today. Periklis Koukos, Giorgos Koumendakis and Dimitris Papadimitriou have written three works especially for the Camerata’s period instruments, which the ensemble will be premiering tonight. The distinctive qualities of period instruments, their limitations and their strengths, motivated the composers to explore new timbres and combinations.
But it is not just the tone colours that make this music new, it is also our newly-rediscovered knowledge of the style and practices of the past which opens up new horizons in performance as well as making it possible for composers to explore a new sonic field beyond that of the contemporary mainstream orchestra. One cannot help but wonder how Lully, Rameau and Gluck would react, if they heard music written in the future played on the instruments of their own time?
