Get ready for a totally unique experience: a dance just for you!

What can two chairs and two lines on the ground signify? In “One One One”, the two chairs are provided for two viewers who are invited to experience something unique. At the other end of each line, there’s a performer ready to dance for them while the rest of the audience participates by choosing the song they like best. The two performers reflect the reactions to their dance like a mirror, and in doing so treat the audience to a new dance experience which calls roles and boundaries into question and which, though public, remains utterly private.

Having worked with the greatest choreographers of our time -William Forsythe, for one- Ioannis Mantafounis has never ceased to surprise us with his rare talents as a performer, but also with his insatiable appetite for choreographic experimentation. On this occasion, he has joined forces with the equally special Aoife McAtamney for his investigations. Bringing subversive humour and endlessly shape-shifting movement to the performance, the two dancers weave an intricate fan of emotions and images and create magical moments of interaction with the audience.

Ioannis Mandafounis was born in 1981, and studied at the Greek National School of Dance and the Conservatoire de Paris.

Ioannis Mandafounis has a long association with Onassis Stegi – he was one of the artists whose works inaugurated our venue. He also presented “Cover Up” with Fabrice Mazliah and May Zarhy at Onassis Stegi in 2011.

In 2015, Mandafounis won Outstanding Male Dancer at the Swiss Dance Awards.

In 2009, he formed the Mamaza art collective with Fabrice Mazliah and May Zarhy, as well as Cie Projet 11 with Mazliah. In 2012, the Mamaza collective decided not to create any more works together, and Cie Projet 11 became Cie Ioannis Mandafounis.

Mandafounis has collaborated with numerous artists for the co-creation of works. As a continuation of his collaboration with former Mamaza collective members, he created “Pausing” with Zarhy in 2012, and “Eifo Efi” with Mazliah in 2013. He also created “Twisted Pair” with Nikos Dragonas, Olivia Ortega and Katerina Skiada in 2013, “ApersonA” with Elena Gionnatti and Nina Vallon in 2014, “One One One” with Aoife McAtamney in 2015, and “Ossip Mandelstam: A Performance” with Bruce Myers, Elena Giannotti and Roberta Mosca in 2016.

In 2011-12, Cie Projet 11 were named associate artists of the deSingel theater in Antwerp. In 2012, Mandafounis was supported by the Reso Swiss Dance Network, as well as the Modul-dance EU cultural project. The dance pieces “Twisted Pair” (2013) and “ApersonA” (2014) were co-produced by the PRAIRIE – Pour-cent culture Migros program. The same program also came on board as a co-producer of Cie Ioannis Mandafounis’ new works for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
