What are the traces that the re-visions of C. P. Cavafy’s poetic angle leave today, from the republications of his verses to modern art and the digital world? This year, students of the Ionian University focus on techniques of creative writing and transcription, approaching poetry through experimantal tools and applications.

The Cavafy Archive collaborates with the Ionian University, in a series of workshops that explore the possibilities and limits of the interdisciplinary, intersectional and interartistic approaches to Cavafy’s life and work.

The program “Cavafy goes to University”, for a second year, focuses on the inquiry of contemporary theoretical developments and reading approaches of Cavafy’s life and work, through the combination of poetic discourse and digital archival material, drawing content, methods and practices from different arts and deploying experimental tools and applications.

The students that will attend the workshops will participate in discussions and events concerning various themes and applications on literature and criticism, translation, audio-visual arts, dance. Most of all, they will practically work with experimental tools, which will allow them to examine and empirically understand the dynamic potential of the subject, but also the methods of avant-garde movements.

In the workshops, digitized documents from the Cavafy Archive, such as manuscripts, notes, photographs, letters or the poet’s famous “broadsheets”, but also recordings and musical settings of the Cavafian poetry, as well as various versions of parody, mimicry and appropriation of Cavafian works –in Greek or other languages– will be deployed.

The program “Cavafy Goes to University” is intended for 4th year undergraduate students and postgraduate students of the Departments of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting, Music Studies, and Audio & Visual Arts. Students from other departments may also attend the program. In exceptional circumstances 1st, 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate students may be accepted.

The students that will attend all workshops sessions will receive a certificate of attendance.

The program “Cavafy goes to University” does not aim at research or teaching, but at the creative and interdisciplinary deployment of Cavafy’s work and digital archives, by students from different fields and with varying interests, in a not strictly academic context, which will allow for completely novel theoretical links and unexpected artistic elaborations of the Cavafian poetic world.

The program is realized in collaboration with the Ionian University, with the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting, the Department of Music Studies, as well as the Department of Audio & Visual Arts.
