The internationally-celebrated DV8 Physical Theatre company and the award-winning Lloyd Newson visit Greece for the first time with the new work they premiered this summer in Australia.
From the 1989 book burnings of Salman Rushdie’s “The Satanic Verses”, to the murder of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh and the controversy of the ‘Muhammad cartoons’ in 2005, “Can we talk about this?” examines how these events have reflected and influenced multicultural policies, press freedom and artistic censorship.
In the follow up to the critically acclaimed “To Be Straight With You”, this new documentary-style dance-theater production uses real-life interviews and archive footage. Contributors include a number of high profile writers, campaigners and politicians.
Lloyd Newson's work since 1986 as the Director of DV8 Physical Theatre has had a dynamic impact on contemporary dance and theater. His stage and film work with DV8 has consistently received major awards.
Born in Australia, Newson's interest in dance arose while studying psychology and social work at Melbourne University, a fascination that led to a full scholarship at London Contemporary Dance School. He danced and/or choreographed with many companies —including Modern Dance Ensemble, Impulse Dance Theatre/New Zealand Ballet Company, One Extra Dance Theatre and Extemporary Dance Theatre— before forming his own company.
From the beginning Newson believed that his work, because of its narrative underpinnings, would translate well onto film. Consequently filmmakers David Hinton and Clara von Gool translated three of DV8’s stage works into film with Newson directing DV8’s last film, "The Cost of Living" (2004/05), himself. This work has subsequently won 16 international awards. Straddling dance, text, theater and film, Newson work’s refuses to be defined. He is interested in conceiving original work rather than performing existing plays or reinterpreting classical ballets. More recently he has started exploring verbatim theater, looking at the relationship between text (drawn from interviews) and movement.
DV8 Physical Theatre is a dance company based at Artsadmin in London, UK. It was founded in 1986 by an independent collective of chiefly modern dancers and it is led by Lloyd Newson. The company has been known to incorporate dancers with disabilities into its pieces, for example in the film "The Cost of Living", which is both made by and features company participants. It has thus far produced 16 dance pieces, all of which have toured internationally, and 4 award-winning films for television featuring the types of modern dance they advance.
