The Festival does not focus on a particular kind of music. A characteristic of its program, such variety also aims to attract a diverse public, wishing to discover new kinds of music.
Introduction
Open your ears! The European music festival for young people returns to the Onassis Stegi to transform it into a musical labyrinth full of adventures.
For the third year, the Big Bang, the European festival of music for young people and adventurous spectators aged 0-12 years old, returns at the Onassis Stegi.
Our young friends will see and experience a vibrant musical program, consisting of concerts, sound installations, and workshops. At the Big Bang, musicians specialized in different genres and styles will try to find which is the best way to present music to children.
However, the Big Bang is not simply a festival that addresses children. It also presupposes their participation. In each event, professional musicians open a dialogue with the young singers and players. Some times it even seems as if they share the stage with them.
The Festival aims to entirely improve the quality of music for children in Europe through exploration and adventure. Children and their parents get to know portraits of renowned composers and kinds of music, learning more about poetry – older and contemporary – but also sound art. Productions are based on all the kinds of sound art, as well as on the creative use of objects, which were not originally designed as musical instruments. Through the use of multimedia, they watch and take part in concerts.
The European network Big Bang is an initiative of Zonzo Compagnie from Belgium. The support of the European Union made possible the collaboration of cultural centres throughout Europe. All these institutions have undertaken to work together for a common mission: to present the elaborate world of music in an imaginative and adventurous way, which is approachable to children.

Six Ictus Fellows have decided to take up the challenge of giving a concert without musical instruments. They are not afraid to get their hands dirty and work flat out to achieve their goal.
Four fascinating scores have been uncovered for the occasion. With “Homework II, In the Garage” we delve into Francois Sahran’s toolbox in the hope of carrying out an impossible repair. With Francesco Filidei’s “I Funerali dell' Anarchico Serantini we find ourselves in a law court where the public can also have its say. Then we sit around the table at home where all our problems are discussed and swept aside in the course of Thierry de Mey’s “Musique de tables”. We end up in the timber yard with Steve Reichs’ “Music for Pieces of Wood” where everything finally makes sense in this “happily ever after” tale.

Zonzo Compagnie conquers the world with intriguing performances about the work of fascinating musicians and composers. Earlier on, the music of John Cage, Miles Davis and Luciano Berio were unpacked and tackled, now it's Bach's turn. Bach is a monument. A wizard of sound and melody, a genius stringing together staggering fugues, preludes, chorals and partitas and who, 250 years after his death, still tops the charts. In “3ACH, two violinists guide you through Bach's world. Together they weave Bach's melodies past unparalleled harmonies. In a multimedial musical performance, the audience is submerged in what many believe to be the most beautiful music ever written.
Bach's music is intertwined with that of Piet-Jan van Rossum, one of the most inspiring composers of the Netherlands, who made his own interpretation of Bach's oeuvre.

“Family Rave” sensation Big Fish Little Fish are joining us for their first European party. Launched 2013 in London this family rave crew now hold events all over the UK.
Three time 'Best family event' award winners at the national "Family Arts Awards', they bring together big name DJs, an effects-laden dance floor, craft and play activities for families with children aged between 0-8 years.
BFLF have played venues from the National Gallery, Glastonbury Festival, The Museum of London Docklands and iconic clubs across the UK.
Club music such as house, techno, hip hop and drum'n'bass plays as bubbles, giant balloons, and glitter cannon fill the dance floor as the event finishes with the legendary parachute dance. Craft activities keep children entertained as well as the whole family coming together to dance on the dance floor.
DJ Food (AKA Strictly Kev) (Ninja Tune) will be on the decks for BFLF at Big Bang Athens - he is an absolute genius with over 25 years DJing experience. His mixing is a joy to behold - he really is second to none. The craft activities are created and managed by Captain Cookie - join in and create something to wear while you dance. What’s the pitch of a cooking pot? How many frequencies can a cupboard produce? In what beat does a kettle vibrates?
Conventional household and street items blend harmonically with vocals, classic and electric instruments, in order to narrate tales of trees, soil, mountains, trains, streets, people and emotions.
Seven instruments and 75 objects await to take you on a journey in which every aspect of daily life is reused in the most unexpected way. Imagination lead us to extraordinary creations and everything around us is sound!

An imaginative and humorous duet of movement and sound, with many theatrical and musical elements, based on improvisation and interaction with the young audience, led by the narration of a unique fairytale.
Two narrators, Nikoleta Xaneriou (dancer) and Martha Mavroidi (musician) utilize body movement and sounds produced by the human voices to unfold images and stories that no other fairytale could hold!
In “Wordless Fairytale”, the narrative potential of music and dance is fused with the imagination and spontaneity of children. The musician, using her voices and a loop station, records and reproduces her vocals on the spot, thus creating rich-timbre environments and multiple levels of sound through polyphonic techniques. Within these soundscapes, the dancer employs movement improvisation techniques to translate sound into movement.
The performers interact with each other and with the members of the young audience, maintaining a discreet balance between action and reaction. The children move freely within the project’s space, thus contributing with their movement and sounds in the development of the fairytale’s narrative.

Multicultural Choir Polyphonica with Elsa Kuding and Myrto Ticof, together with the renowned musician and educator Paul Griffiths on the creation of a new composition-song cycle, with focus on Planet Earth.
“Pale Blue Dot” was the name given to a famous image of Earth taken by the Voyager Mission spacecraft in 1990 as it was leaving the solar system and also a book by cosmologist Carl Sagan inspired by this image. It shows the tiny vulnerable world which is our home set against the enormity of space.
In the workshop of Paul Griffiths, the voices of the multicultural choir created a tapestry of vocal sound that incorporated existing songs, newly created songs, chants, poetry and vocal textures that depict and represent the abundance and diversity of people, nature and life on our fragile planet.
In the workshop some songs that Paul Griffiths knows and listens were taught to the choir, as well as some songs that the choir knows and sings were used. Inspired by these and the theme of the project we started to create new pieces using voices, words, melody, harmony, rhythm movement and body percussion.
Together we weaved and constructed a brand new performance using the ideas that we shared and made. As a general theme the focus is on Planet Earth; the sky, the sea, the land, the nature and people. Without getting too political, we thought it would be good to celebrate this extraordinary place that we all share while so many seem intent on destroying it.

Hovering – flying – flight – a journey up above, high, to the sky!
In Aristophanes’s comedy “Peace”, Trygaeus rides a beetle and soars heavenwards to speak to the gods. Experimental musical instruments and constructions inspired by simple everyday object offer a different dimension to this flight as they paint with colorful sounds the emotions it evokes. The original sounds thus produced create a new musical world which excites our young listeners’ imagination and demonstrates that music is omnipresent and can be created at any given place or time.

The “Turntable Project”: an interactive audio-visual performance for children above 6 years of age, using turntables and vinyl records as the main media for producing sound and image.
In the “Turntable Project” children become acquainted with vinyl as an object and with the turntable as a medium of sound production/reproduction to create their own sounds using very simple methods and techniques. Two musicians play old vinyl records, manipulate their surface, experiment with the turntable’s pitch control and, by using pedal effects and live looping, create a multidimensional musical/visual environment. At the same time, a video artist uses a spinning vinyl as the main visual theme in a live projection of moving images through video feed and animation.
Next, in a game of improvisation, the children “play” with the sounds and images they create on stage. Simultaneously, they experientially familiarize themselves with fundamental practices/techniques of turntablism, through which, according to the composer John Oswald, “the record player becomes a musical instrument”.

Suddenly, a piano is left without its wooden case and its interior is revealed in front of our very own eyes. Long strings, shorter strings, padded hammers, keys... This piano is like no other: a secret recipe is hidden in its mechanism and each sound can become an ingredient in a musical… cooking! We discover the bizarre sound-materials inside this enormous pot, we choose those we like best, we combine them, we mix them and then we heat them up, to make a delicious recipe. We close our eyes and enjoy it with our ears open wide! The “chefs” and the listeners interchange, so that every member of the group will have the chance to experience cooking with sounds.

Sound can be produced, recorded, processed, transformed, shaped and reproduced. Through a series of games and actions, sounds are created with the help of children. Then, they are recorded and processed through technological means. Children learn how sound can be sampled and morphed into something totally new. These sounds can originally come from recorder music, sounds of nature, the human voice or something totally unworldly and artificial! Next, they are layered over an image, in a realistic or absolutely unrealistic manner! Children (and their parents) decide, select and evaluate the result. A mini studio is set in the small space of a dressing room (music room), where the children become acquainted with the recording and processing tools. All the actions, experimentations and final productions are performed by the children themselves. At the end, they see on a TV screen the sounds they made or even their voice being the soundtrack of a short video, which can be send to them via e-mail!

For two successive days, Dimitris Desyllas and the Percussion Ensemble of Athens Conservatoire invite us to the enchanting, explosive and colorful world of percussive instruments. The ensemble’s musicians, being in constant movement, take us on a journey in the spectrum of 20th century creation, from John Luther Adams to John Cage; from Iannis Xenakis and marching band compositions to Tibetan timbres and minimalism. A journey for all ages.
The ensemble begins its performance at the open space’s center, by playing tubes and funnels that produce a wind-like effect and, as the musician move outwards, they create colorful soundscapes with Tibetan bowls, as they simultaneously incorporate the audience in their performance. From then on, for twenty minutes, the ensemble proceeds to perform the aforementioned musical compositions in specially designed locations within the same site, leading us to a crescendo and an outburst of emotions.
