Introduction

Flight and the return to earth: acrobatics meet contemporary art in a magical, gravity-defying production.

In Morocco, they say Sidi Ahmed Ou Moussa, a great Sufi teacher who lived in the 16th century, found the spiritual path to heaven one day. But looking down at the Earth from on high, he decided he wanted to go back. This legend, which symbolizes the acrobatic arc, lies at the very heart of “Azimut”, a work which tackles return, gravity and the search for our spiritual path.

What does it mean to be an acrobat in Morocco today, in an ever-changing political and social context? Which road should we choose? It is questions like these that fuel this production directed by Aurélien Bory, one of France's most authentic artists, in this, his Greek premiere. Between Earth and Sky, the acrobat is sometimes an observer, sometimes a heavenly body. Gravity and its defiance —flight, man's age-old desire to take to the air— is transformed into a game which involves legendary acrobats, theatrical machines, images awash with poetry and magic, spiritual allusions to Sufism, scenes of contemporary Morocco and a 16th-century legend, and transports us far, far away, up into the heavens. Le Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger was formed at the initiative of Sanae El Kamouni in 2003.

Her aim was to initiate Tangiers’ acrobats to new circus routines, based on Morocco’s unique tradition of acrobatics, with its own special history, practised to a very high standard by numerous troupes and families. Convinced that a new history could be invented with these performers, she asked director Aurélien Bory to devise the first contemporary Moroccan acrobatics show in Tangiers. “Taoub” was created in June 2004 and has been a resounding success worldwide ever since, with more than 300 performances to its credit.

The Groupe acrobatique de Tanger then met with the Swiss directors Martin Zimmermann and Dimitri de Perrot, who created “Chouf Ouchouf” for them in 2009, boosting the Group’s fame among the public and theatres.

In 2013, the Groupe acrobatique de Tanger worked again with Aurélien Bory on his new creation “Azimut”.

Workshop with Aurélien Bory

Monday 29 December 2014
11:00-14:00 | 12 €

The artist approaches theater as a form of spatial art and his workshop will focus exactly on this concept. More specifically, the participants will develop a deeper understanding of the relation between body and space —two fundamental aspects of theater and dance— by exploring the full spectrum of dynamics that occur from their interaction.
