“Michael Marmarinos in Faust's Workshop” by Elias Giannakakis
Onassis Stegi participates in the 21st Athens International Film Festival–Opening Nights | Friday 25 September 2015
In fall 2013 Michael Marmarinos decided to stage “Faust”. The camera followed him from the first rehearsal to the work’s premiere in January 2014.
The film does not only aim to document a unique moment in theater through numerous, difficult shots, and an enormous amount of recorded material. It also aims to conceive, even minimally, something from the approach of such a special theater director.
It does not constitute the director’s portrait. Aiming to shed light to the way he works through such a demanding and timeless text, the film highlights the main threads of his thought: simplicity becomes an opening to reality; actors serve as human documents instead of embodying drama; aversion to classic theatricality in favor of scenic empathy. An approach that has been in constant renewal, managing to stay relevant for approximately 35 years.
