A scooter in Seoul; dancing at bridges in Geneva; an avatar in the role of an iconic clairvoyant; a homage to Athens’ landmarks. Welcome to the world of ENTER. Visit onassis.org/enter.
New works by Katerina Andreou, Maria Diakopanagiotou, Ioannis Mandafounis and Eun-Me Ahn.
ENTER: Reflecting on the present day, this moment in time and the current situation, the Onassis Foundation continues to share and create without contact but with the same love for culture and its people, the artists and their audiences. During the last weeks, the Onassis Foundation has commissioned new, innovative works by artists from across the globe, created in 120 hours. Without having any access to theatre stages, rehearsal rooms or studios, the artists create everything on their own; their laptops are turned into a creative superpower. We press ENTER to view in our screens new artistic forms, new works, which aim to constitute a kind of artistic digital time-capsule; a ray of hope for the artistic world which has been hit hard, yet another proof that we are not alone.
We are out on the streets again. The cities have stopped bringing to mind scenes from science-fiction films. Once more they are filled with us, as we are beginning to move again towards one another. Oddly and somewhat awkwardly, it seems as if what was once familiar has ceased to be so; the freedom of assembly is being recovered. Streets, squares and public spaces become once more the horizon for the new, post-covid19 period. This “here and now”, in which the public space becomes ours again, is reflected in the works of this ENTER 7th week featuring artists from Europe and Asia: a feast that interacts with the cities in which we live.
Based on the French province of Northern Burgundy, choreographer and dancer Katerina Andreou sends us the strangest postcard with her work Feat.JULIE. She entrusts Julie, an avatar programmed by a digital software, to talk on her behalf, conveying a deeply confessional monologue for the times of the pandemic; created by the same software, the background strongly recalls a Greek island.
An actress with a unique temperament, Maria Diakopanagiotou entices us in an equally distinctive tour of Athens in her work Perspective, stopping at what she considers as iconic landmarks. In this oddly comic Athenian psychogeography, statues have their own place.
In Can I Take you to the Bridge Beyond the Scene, Ioannis Mandafounis dances at 5am on the bridges of Geneva, like a new James Brown. Alone, he dances in a frenzy paying homage to the style of the “King of Soul”. His sole companion is the gaze of the cameraman, following him closely yet at the same time keeping a safety distance.
With Body & Seoul, the Korean artistic director and choreographer Eun-Me Αhn transports us to her home city, Seoul, for 15 minutes. On her scooter, she follows the performers of a hula-hoop endurance race at a public space of the Asian big city.
Works by important artists from all over the world, belonging to different generations and artistic fields, are already available online. Since its launch on April 24, each week, the project has released new groupings of commissions, and in the coming weeks Onassis Foundation will continue to collaborate with exciting partners. Week 6 included works by Yorgos Zois, Simos Kakalas, Eric Baudelaire, Tim Etchells - Jim Fletcher - Chris Thorpe, ITCHY-O, Ethan Lipton & his Orchestra, Daniel Wetzel. Week 5 was curated by The Chocolate Factory Theater with the following artists: Madeline Best & Brian Rogers, Tei Blow, keyon gaskin, Dynasty Handbag, Annie-B Parson. Week 4 of ENTER was curated by the Queens Museum, who engaged artists including Xin Liu, Samita Sinha, Frisly Soberanis, QUEENSBOUND, and Alina Tenser & Gabo Camnitzer; Greek artists who contributed to Week 4 included Lena Kitsopoulou, Maria Papadimitriou, and RootlessRoot. Week 3 included: acclaimed Independent Spirit Award-winning and Golden Globe-nominated actress and writer Isabella Rossellini and Flying Karamazov Brothers member Paul Magid; Ziad Antar; Evi Kalogiropoulou; Kareem Kalokoh; Risa Puno and Avi Dobkin; RootlessRoot; Kostis Stafylakis, Theo Triantafyllidis, and Alexis Fidetzis; and Akira Takayama. Elias Adam, Simos Kakalas, Vasilis Kekatos, Andonis Foniadakis, Emily Johnson, Kathryn Hamilton (Sister Sylvester), RootlessRoot, and Stefanos Tsivopoulos were featured in Week 2; and the series launched in Week 1 with works from Dimitris Karantzas, Efthimis Filippou, 600 HIGHWAYMEN, Maria Antelman, Kimberly Bartosik, Annie Dorsen, and Radiohole.
Also uploaded soon will be new, innovative works by Isabella Rossellini & Paul Magid, Effie Birba and Aris Servetalis, Kat Válastur, Christos Sarris, as well as many more international artists and organizations, such as NEW INC. Press ΕΝΤΕR to view over 45 new artistic works, free of charge and time limit, and explore works that reflect on and give voice to the current situation.
In Brief
Katerina Andreou, Feat.JULIE
Video | Duration: 16’
South Burgundy
“She says that when everyday rituals, living practices and working methods have to suddenly adapt to new rules, uncanniness may take over. A dive into the personal seemed to be a way out. Even if that demands an avatar to happen.”
This video, created on the principle of found footage, is a performance through the interface of the online demo of a text-to-speech software. In this dystopian and digital world, where the distance becomes an inevitable condition, an avatar is used as the only mediator of a discourse that flirts with narration. The limit between who is performing and who is watching, who is talking and who is listening, what is personal and what is public, what is truth and what is fiction, gets blurry. And connection gets harder. Julie agrees.
Katerina Andreou is a dance and music creator and choreographer, based in France.
Born in Greece, she graduated from the University of Athens’ Law School and the State School of Dance in Athens. As a scholar of the Greek foundation ‘Pratsika’, she attended the program ESSAIS in CNDC d’Angers in 2011, under the direction of Emmanuelle Huynh, and holds a master’s degree from Paris 8 on research and choreography. She was a Danceweb scholar at Vienna’s ImPulsTanz festival in 2015.
As a dancer, she has collaborated, among others, with DD Dorvillier, Αnne Lise Le Gac, Lenio Kaklea, Bryan Campbell, Emmanuelle Huynh. In her own work, she is interested in developing states of presence sorting out from a constant negotiation between contrasted tasks, fictions and universes, often questioning the relation to ideas as authority and autonomy, communication and censorship. She often creates the sound design and/or the music of her own pieces.
She was awarded the choreography prize ‘Prix Jardin d'Europe’ in ImPulsTanz 2016 for her solo dance piece “A kind of fierce,” a coproduction of Athens & Epidaurus Festival. She is also a Panorama Artist of the network Departures and Arrivals (DNA), and an Aerowaves 2019 network artist, with her solo “BSTRD,” an Onassis Stegi co-production.

Maria Diakopanagiotou, perspective
Video | Duration: 17΄46’’
Five sights of Athens as seen from another point of view. The various names of Truman, the passing-by runner, Charilaos Trikoupis’ specialty, the animal instincts of love, and Melina, they all share personal data in the time of mask-wearing. Now, people and sights find time to get to know each other.
Maria Diakopanagiotou (b. 1982) is an actress and this is her debut DIY documentary film. She has been a ballet dancer for twelve years, practicing the Vaganova method. Most recently, she featured on Yannis Kakleas’ musical “Chicago.” Maria has performed at Epidaurus, the National Theater of Greece etc. Most notable performances: “Golfo,” “Operetta,” “Decameron,” “The Birds,” “One-way Ticket,” “Crime and Punishment,” “Flantro,” “The Killing Game.” She has also appeared in the feature films “Xenia” directed by Panos Koutras, “Nyfes” (Brides) by Pantelis Voulgaris, and “Magic Skin” by Kostas Samaras. But, for her, the most important is that she is the ‘mother’ of Noba, a mongrel female Malinois dog.

Video | Duration: 7΄35΄΄
Geneva
In reference to the ‘King of Soul’, in the midst of Swiss confinement, Ioannis Mandafounis and his collaborator, Samuel Schmidiger, woke up at 5 am one morning to hit the consecutive bridges of Geneva with some revisited and reassembled James Brown moves. Taking him up the river Arve, Mandafounis traveled bridge by bridge through the awakening of the city in a dialectic scheme. The two of them, are the Camera and the body, connection is their tool, listening their aim and the scenery their stage.

Since 2015, Ioannis assumed personally the artistic direction of his Geneva-based company Cie Ioannis Mandafounis, inviting various artists to collaborate with him in each project. He has received commissions to create original works for internationally renowned theater and dance companies, such as the Ballet of the Greek National Opera, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, The National Theater of Greece, Corpus (Royal Danish Ballet), the Lyon Opera Ballet in France, Norrdans Sweden etc. Ioannis also teaches improvisation workshops, and classical ballet classes from his specific approach as a Martial Arts (Budo) practitioner. Eun-Me Ahn, Body & Seoul
Video | Duration: 15΄34΄΄
Seoul
As one of the first countries hit by Covid-19, South Korea was also one of the first to get back to a ‘normal’ life. The pandemic the world has been experiencing has changed our societies and impacted human interactions: the way we look at each other, the way we communicate, our physicality and the way we use our body, especially in the public space. Three month later, riding her scooter around Seoul with some of the dancers of her company, Eun-Me Ahn explores her city and the relationship of people to dance and body.
Leading artist of Korean performing arts scene, Eun-Me Ahn studied contemporary dance at Ehwa Womans University in Seoul. She founded Ahn Eun-Me Company in 1988 before moving to New York in 1991 to study at the Tisch School of the Arts. In 2001 moved back to Korea and continued her choreographic and performance practice revisiting classics of her country (“Princess Bari”) or investigating social issues – often working with non-professionals – like generations (“Dancing Grandmothers,” “Dancing Teen Teen,” “Dancing Middle-aged Men”) or handicap (“Ahnsim Dance” with visually impaired, “Daeshim Dance” with small size people). With over 150 pieces in her repertoire, she is internationally renowned with emblematic productions such as “Symphoca Princess Bari,” “Let Me Change Your Name,” and “Dancing Grandmothers” that have been presented on the most prestigious stages around the world. Eun-Me Ahn is associated artist to Théâtre de la Ville-Paris.
