Vicente Fernández González
Vicente Fernández González is an Associate Professor of Translation and Interpreting (Modern Greek) at the University of Malaga, and corresponding member of the Hellenic Authors’ Society. In 1992 he was awarded the Spanish National Prize for Translation for his Spanish translation of George Seferis’s novel “Six Nights on the Acropolis” (“Seis noches en la Acrópolis”). In 1999 he edited an UNESCO funded special issue of the prestigious literary journal “Litoral” dedicated to C. P. Cavafy. In 2001 his book “La ciudad de las ideas: Sobre la poesía de C. P. Cavafis y sus traducciones castellanas” [The City of Ideas: On C. P. Cavafy’s Poetry and its Translations into Spanish] was published by CSIC (Spanish National Research Council). In 2003 he was again awarded the Spanish National Prize for Translation, this time for his translation into Spanish of Thanasis Hatzopoulos’s poetry book “Writings on the Rose: An Outline of a Poetics” (“Verbos para la rosa: Esbozo de poética”). In Greece he was awarded in 2012 the State Literary Translation Award (at the category of translation of a modern Greek literature work into a foreign language) for the rendition into Spanish (along with Leandro García Ramírez, María López Villalba and Ioanna Nicolaidou) of StratisTsirkas’s trilogy “Drifting Cities” (“Ciudades a la deriva”). In 2013 he edited the volume “Málaga Cavafis Barcelona,” an anthology of Catalan and Spanish translations of Cavafy’s poetry. He has served as an editor of the Translation Studies journal “Trans” (2016-2019), and member of the editorial board of the Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies journal “Erytheia.”
