Tonia Marketaki

From 1960 to 1964, Tonia Marketaki studied in Paris at the French Institute of Cinema (IDHEC) and the Drama School of TNP (Théâtre National Populaire) under the direction of Georges Wilson. In 1967, he made her short film debut, “O Giannis ki o dromos (John and the road).” During the dictatorship, she was imprisoned, sentenced on probation, and sent into exile. In 1973, she made he first feature film, “John the Violent,” produced, written, and directed by herself, which won four awards at the Thessaloniki Festival of Greek Cinema. In 1975, she filmed the documentary “Nisyros,” while in 1977 she worked as an assistant to Television General Manager. In 1978, she made a 9-episode television series, “To lemonodasos (The lemon forest),” while in 1979 she filmed the documentary “Epidaurus.” Between 1976 and 1980, she worked for the broadcast “Paraskinio (Backstage),” and in 1983 she made the film “The Price of Love,” produced, written and directed by herself, which was honored with seven awards at the Greek State Film Awards. Her 1992 film “Crystal Nights” received the Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Costumes Design awards at the Greek State Film Awards, and the Best Actress and Best Costumes Design awards at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. She died on July 26, 1994.
