Stavros Zoumboulakis

Writer, President of the Supervisory Council of the National Library of Greece

Stavros Zoumboulakis was born in 1953 in Sykia, Laconia – a village in southern Peloponnese. He studied law and literature in Athens, and philosophy in Paris. He served for many years in Secondary Education. From 1998 to 2012, he served as director of the journal “Nea Estia.” Since 2008, he has served as president of the Board of Directors of the “Artos Zois” foundation. In February 2013, he was appointed president of the Board of Trustees of the National Library of Greece. In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology of the University of Ioannina, and in 2019 by the Department of Philology of the School of Philosophy of the University of Crete. In 2017, he was honored with the Best Essay-Criticism State Award for his book “Ypo to fos you mythistorimatos” [In the Light of the Novel] (2015), and with the Academy of Athens – “Petros Haris Foundation” award for his book “O stenagmos ton peniton: Dokimia gia ton Papadiamanti” [The Sigh of the Poor: Essays on Papadiamantis] (2016). His latest work includes the titles: “Anthodesmi gia ti Megali Ebdomada” [A Bouquet for the Holy Week] (2021); “Mythistorimatiko anagnostirio” [A Reading Room for Novels] (2021); “Ithiki tis agapis kai politiki praxi” [Ethics of Love and Political Praxis] (2023); “800 met’ empodion: Mikra dokimia” [800 with Obstacle: Short Essays] (2024).
