Mohamed Adel Dessouki
Mohamed Adel Dessouki is an educator and a visual artist who lives and works in Alexandria, Egypt. He got his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Alexandria University in 2000 and earned a master’s degree from the Arab Academy for Science and Technology in 2003 and a PhD in Architecture from Cairo University in 2012. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology. Dessouki studied art at l'Atelier d'Alexandrie between 1992 and 1994, parallel to his high school studies. He participated in l'Atelier’s Youth Salons in the years 1994, 2000, and 2001. After a long pause, he resumed his artistic practice in 2017 and has since then participated in several group exhibitions. His first solo show, “Memories of an Asphalt Road,” was presented in Alexandria’s Institut Français d’Egypte in 2019. He was one of the participants of MASS Alexandria’s Independent Studio and Study Programme (ISSP) for the year 2018/2019. In his art practice, Dessouki’s work basically focuses on memory, architecture, and the everyday. Dessouki is a founding member of the Save Alex initiative which has been advocating, since 2012, to protect the built heritage of the city of Alexandria. He also blogs about the city of Alexandria, its endangered heritage, and its history in Gudran Medina Mot'aba (Walls of an Exhausted City).
