Miguel Melgares
Miguel Angel Melgares is an Onassis AiR Critical Practices Mentor 2019-20.
Miguel Angel Melgares was born in 1980 in Malaga, Spain. He works as a visual artist and a dramaturge. Miguel holds a PhD in Arts (University of Granada), with a dissertation titled “The End of Performance Rhetorics.” His ambitions in the field of performing arts led him to settle in Amsterdam and take part in DasArts, the internationally acclaimed performance laboratory.
As a dramaturge, he has developed a prolific activity, collaborating closely with the German artist Julian Hetzel, working on the latest productions of the Greek choreographer Tzeni Argyriou, or being part of the unique performances of Sonja Jokiniemi, among others. These artists present their work in the international performing art circuit – including, most recently, the Onassis Stegi, Αthens (GR), Steirischer Herbst, Graz (AT), La Biennale di Venezia, Venice (IT), Impulse Theater Festival, FFT Düsseldorf (DE), Malta Festival Poznan (PL), Spieltart Festival, Munich (DE), and Zodiak, Helsinki (FI), among others.
Parallel to his creative work, Miguel is currently working as a tutor in DAS Theater in Amsterdam and has initiated different projects like the “SLOW DOWN Winter Performance Festival” or the academic platform “BastardScene, a Permanent Seminary about Expanded Performance, Language and Edition” at the University of Granada.
