Michael Herzfeld
Michael Herzfeld, a social anthropologist, is Ernest E. Monrad Research Professor of the Social Sciences, Harvard University, and IIAS Professor of Critical Heritage Studies Emeritus, Leiden University. Author of twelve books (most recently “Subversive Archaism: Troubling Traditionalists and the Politics of National Heritage,” 2022) and numerous articles and reviews, and producer of two ethnographic films, he has conducted research (primarily in Greece, Italy, and Thailand) on the politics of gender; the impact of historic conservation and gentrification; nationalism and bureaucracy; crypto-colonialism; and the ethnography of knowledge. Holder of honorary doctorates from two Greek universities (Macedonia and Crete), he was made an honorary citizen of Greece in 2021.
