Onassis Culture supports independent Greek cinema and the short film format, embracing the processes of creation and artistic growth. For the second year, it addresses an open call to Greek and foreign filmmakers to submit their proposals for short fiction and documentary films, live-action, and animation. The Onassis Culture team will assess their proposals and will concern co-productions with Greek production companies. Five of these will receive funding ranging from 5,000 to 15,000 euros. The selected short films will go into production to find their way to the big screen and encounter their domestic and international audiences at festivals around the world.
In the first Open Call of 2023, the Onassis Culture team selected five short film projects that stood out for their singular cinematic visions, bold writing, and strong team dynamics.
“That Brilliant Light Rising” – Lia Tsalta
“Fouetté” – Dimitris Zouras
“MJ” – Yiorgos Fourtounis
“New Wild” – Thanasis Trouboukis
“The Animals in the Forest” – Dimitra Mitsaki
Applications have begun. Submit your proposals by February 29, 2024.

The submission of an application as part of this Open Call constitutes the complete and unreserved acceptance of its terms.
Submitted film proposals can be based either on an original screenplay, or on a pre-existing idea (with proof of copyright, or an option on a pre-existing work). The submission of a proposal does not guarantee its selection. It is expressly stated here that the submission of a proposal does not entail the transfer of any copyright over the work to Onassis Culture. Any such transfer of copyright shall occur only, and as necessary, in the event a proposal is selected, and by means of a written agreement to be signed after the announcement of the results. The exact amount of funding each selected film proposal shall receive is to be decided on a case-by-case basis, and is contingent on the number of submissions to be selected. The results are to be announced four months after the submission deadline.
