Sofia Georgovassili’s “Memoir of a Veering Storm” (2022) is to premiere at the Berlinale – Berlin International Film Festival as part of its Generation competition program (February 7–20). Each year, the Berlinale Generation section presents films starring children and teens, exploring heartfelt and headstrong coming-of-age stories from around the world. “Memoir of a Veering Storm” unfolds one September morning as a storm bears down on the city. A 15-year-old girl skips school and, with the help of her boyfriend, heads to hospital where she must face a sudden jolt into adulthood. Director Sofia Georgovassili developed the screenplay for this short with the support of Onassis Culture, as part of the Onassis Cinema in Development program.

Onassis Cinema in Development

It all starts with a screenplay: new cinematic worlds are first formed on paper. This is why the Onassis Foundation has launched a dedicated program for script development. Writing is one of the first and most important phases in the production of a film – one that requires nerve and time and dedication, since it often takes between two and four years to complete. The Onassis Foundation is unleashing the talent and potential of emerging and established filmmakers, embracing their artistic process from the very start.

Yorgos Zois, Evi Kalogiropoulou, Vasilis Kekatos, and Syllas Tzoumerkas are just some of the filmmakers writing their next projects with the support of the Onassis Foundation. “Ballad for a Pierced Heart” by Yannis Economides (2020), “Broadway” by Christos Massalas (2022), and the film short “Memoir of a Veering Storm” by Sofia Georgovassili (2022), which all benefited from this special program, have since wrapped filming and been presented before audiences at the world’s major film festivals. 2021 also saw the launch of the Onassis Film Development Grant in partnership with the Drama International Short Film Festival – the most important forum of its kind in Greece. Greek filmmakers whose works screen in international competition at the festival will receive a 10,000 euro grant for the development of their first feature film. Manolis Mavris and Aris Kaplanidis were the winners in 2021. The Onassis Foundation’s cinematic family continues to grow and grow.
