Culture starts with play. As part of its OnAthens initiative, the Onassis Foundation is continuing to transform the daily lives of young people at public sporting facilities, this time renovating two basketball courts and a volleyball court set inside the grounds of the largest high school in the Moschato neighborhood. In a city that’s constantly evolving and renewing itself, we are ceaselessly enriching the urban fabric of Athens’ neighborhoods with a series of interventions that mean group play never has to end. Following the refurbishment and regeneration of two sports centers and children’s playgrounds in Neos Kosmos, we are now shifting our attentions to Moschato. The Onassis Foundation is working with the Municipality of Moschato to offer an entirely new sporting experience to students at the area’s 1st High School by completely renovating its four courts, while also installing modern equipment: new safety flooring, basketball nets, volleyball nets, and protective features.
Each year – through a series of commissions, co-productions, and in situ art installations presented at public institutions, and in private and open spaces across the city center – the Onassis Foundation seeks out places where art can intertwine with daily life. Athens is our city, and we see it for what it is: a living organism brimming with fascinating encounters, and filled with people transforming streets and neighborhoods, each in their own way. A place in a constant state of development and renewal as it seeks answers to its most enduring questions. This is why we continue to explore the city, day after day.
