Stegi Radio at C2C Festival in Turin
Stegi Radio continues to build its global network of collaborations with some of the biggest festivals in Europe and abroad. Based in Torino, Club 2 Club is one of the largest and most diverse electronic music festivals in Europe.
A multi-disciplinary record label and platform for artists, PAN has honed the cutting edge of conceptual electronic music for more than a decade. For its 15th anniversary, PAN brings projects from its roster as diverse as Honour, Sangre Nueva (a three-way collaboration between Kelman Duran, DJ Python and Florentino), Bambii, Crystalmess and Tzusing in C2C’s Stone Island Stage, broadcast live in Stegi Radio’s Channel 2.
HONOUR
Listen to BEG 4 MERCY and say the first thing that pops into your head. All answers are good. We know so little about Honour, the mysterious project that recently debuted on the Pan label, that we can only rely on our intuition. If you think you see reflections of Dean Blunt, John T Gast and Mica Levi in the dark vapours of these tracks, you’re on the right track. Because whoever is hiding behind the curtain of the club, is clearly someone who is familiar with the textures of the urban unrest of a future that is now.
SANGRE NUEVA [DJ PYTHON, FLORENTINO, KELMAN DURAN]
The low-slung dembow beat is the musical lingua franca of the Latin world, a musical innovation that’s crossed over into mainstream charts and arenas. Yet within traditionally open-minded club and experimental spaces, reggaeton is still viewed as a novelty. The three artists comprising Sangre Nueva (‘New Blood’) —Florentino, DJ Python & Kelman Duran— have now formed an ad hoc alliance combining respective, strikingly original takes on the genre. Florentino mixes UK-rooted club music with Perreo, crafting invaluable club tools as well as massive, mainstream-threatening tracks with the likes of Bad Gyal & La Zowi & Kaydy Cain. Python, meanwhile, looks back to his teenage years in Miami from his position as a breakthrough artist in the New York club scene. Duran practically innovated a new form of experimental music. The London-based, Caribbean artist reassembles bits of dialogue, music and Reggaeton riddims for an ethereal poetics that has brought him on an unlikely journey from the experimental scene to Beyoncé.BAMBII
Kirsten Azan, baptized Bambii, is one of Canada’s most compelling DJs. Whether online or on dancefloors, her political and musical vernacular give credence to dance music’s ever expanding reach, the relationships it helps forge between individuals, cultures and spaces. As proof, she has spent the last few years touring Europe and Asia as a solo artist and on support for some of the world’s most relevant artists – Kaytranada, Black Coffee, Mykki Blanco, Kelela, and BbyMutha, to name just a few. Publications are also keeping afloat – Wonderland, VOGUE, CRACK, DUMMY and DAZED all want a piece – and awaiting her debut EP, set to hit the internet before the year closes.
ΤZUSING
Based between Shanghai and Taipei but born in Malaysia and raised in Chicago, the artist has fully embraced the complicated intersection of personal, social and national identity. On Tzusing’s sophomore album, ‘绿帽 Green Hat’, the artist meditates on China’s complicated history of patriarchal heteronormativity, and how these archaic double standards continue to dominate the culture in pervasive, often invisible ways. Even in progressive circles, internalized male inadequacy and its inevitable projection of possessiveness and aggression has been brushed underneath the rug, so by addressing it head-on, Tzusing attempts to question these structures using a level of aesthetic anxiety and thematic intensity that’s hard to ignore.
CRYSTALMESS
Crystallmess is a French producer and artist whose music immediately stands out for its abrasive dancefloor feel. Her stunning debut EP "MERE NOISES" got her noticed by Kode9, VTSS, Split from PAN label. Multi-faceted performer and artist Crystallmess has been a curator for Boiler Room, Nova Mix, Vice journalist and NTS resident. In the contemporary art world, she has been programmed for performances at Lafayette Anticipation, the George Pompidou Center, Crystallmess will also have her first exhibition at Tramway, an art gallery located in Glasgow and recently gave a lecture at Harvard.
Carlo Antonelli on the State of Culture in the New World
From streaming services to the dark web, from global art markets to the overconcentration of cinema in the hands of major studios, from electronic music subcultures in warzones to the silent rebirth of illegal raves, the 21st century has produced a complex ever-changing cultural landscape that is difficult to decipher. Throughout his rich and illustrious career, Carlo Antonelli has paid witness to these transformations from varying and diverse viewpoints. Having served as editor-in-chief in major publications, head of contemporary art institutions, cinema producer for the works of Luca Guadagnino as well as critic and historian of culture, most famously known for his seminal book Discoinferno (with Fabio De Luca), he is one of the most well-equipped and informed observers of this brave new world. As part of C2C’s collaboration with Stegi Radio, Carlo Antonelli joins the host of the weekly show "The Archipelago" Yannis-Orestis Papadimitriou on stage for a special live rendition of the show to discuss the state of contemporary culture, how it is shaped by the big events of the century and more importantly how we relate to it.C2C Festival was born in the early 00s as Club To Club, in Turin.
