On January 13, 2024, leading punk-rock figure Laura Jane Grace visited Greece for the first time, offering an incendiary performance at the Onassis Stegi Exhibition Hall -1. A day prior to what we were about to witness at Onassis Stegi, she convened with a handful of close friends at Villa Giuseppe Recordings studio for a general rehearsal or, more likely, a powerful warm-up. One year later, Laura Jane Grace’s first concert in Greece goes on air on the online stage of Onassis Stegi, the Onassis Stegi YouTube Channel, filmed by Christos Sarris.

Anarchic musician, Emmy award nominee, writer, and LGBTQ+ activist, Laura Jane Grace is par excellence a leading persona in the contemporary rock scene, both with her solo career and as a frontwoman for Against Me!, a band she founded in Naples, Florida, in the late 1990s. We first met her when she gave an awe-striking performance in the short film “Walls” by Christos Sarris, inspired by the titular poem of C. P. Cavafy; the film had its worldwide premiere at the “Archive of Desire” festival in New York. We saw her up close at the Onassis Stegi -1, getting a strong taste of her powerful vocals, the livewire guitar riffs, the thundering drums, and her single “Dysphoria Hoodie” (2023), all summoning a punk rock energy that makes you move and shake the rust off.
In the last year, her affiliation with Greece has become even tighter. In June 2024, she returned to Athens, only this time as a fellow of the artistic research program Onassis AiR. She describes the residency as “an exercise in vulnerability, trust, and communication in an age of growing censorship, conformity, and misunderstanding.” With writing new songs in mind, one could say that she was in the right place at the right moment. Together with Paris Campbell Grace, Jacopo Fokas on bass, and Orestis Lagadinos on drums, they formed Laura Jane Grace and the Trauma Tropes and blew the roof off the Bad Tooth Bar in Athens in their first public appearance. From this downtown spot, where Psirri meets Monastiraki, they exploded on the world scene with a tour in Europe and the United States, carrying a new album in their pockets. The tour continues through the spring of 2025, with the list of destinations constantly growing.
The film features clips from Laura Jane Grace’s concert at Onassis Stegi Exhibition Hall -1 and her rehearsal at Villa Giuseppe Recordings studio. Undoubtedly, her punk rock energy transcends space and time.
