The Clermont-Ferrand Festival, an institution of great significance and international scope – comparable to the outreach of Cannes Film Festval, but for the short form – this year pulls its curtain on January 31 and wraps up on February 8. Stavros Petropoulos’s “Pirateland,” an Onassis Culture co-production, will be screened as part of the 47th International Short Film Festival’s International Competition Section, contesting an award.
A dark comedy with pirates and tourists. At the end of the tourist season, a Norwegian family visits the Gramvousa area in Crete and lodges at a small pension run by Manos and his family. At first, they ask Manos and his teenage son, Tasos, to guide them around legendary pirate sites. When they ask for a more authentic pirate experience, Manos agrees, and thus begins an thrilling role-playing game with mock kidnappings and mild violence. But as the game escalates, the tension and excitement of the Norwegian family increase, and the experiences become increasingly perilous. Tasos watches his father immerse himself in his role, which heightens the distance between them. When the tourists’ ultimate request goes beyond limits, Tasos decides to put an end to the game, triggering a clash that might bring father and son a little closer.
Starring Kostas Koroneos, Asterios Rimagmos, Marianthi Pandelopoulou, Aslag Guttormsgaard, Mariann Hole, and Lea Meyer.
