ONASSIS AIR 2022/23 | Invitation to an Open Day

Onassis AiR (Αrtists-in-Residence) – the Onassis Foundation’s international artistic research and residency program – launches its new season by inviting us all to its first Open Day, hosted at its new space in Neos Kosmos.

Onassis AiR is embarking on a new chapter, one that now embraces each and every creative practitioner within the Onassis Foundation arts ecosystem. Joining our existing residents – who were selected to take part in this residency program via a series of open calls put out over the last three years – are artists commissioned to continue their research journeys unimpeded. The Onassis Foundation is investing in individuals, in human relationships, in the process, in unconventional perspectives, and in the potential unleashed by a diverse group of people – curious minds with thought-provoking ideas brought together into an unexpected encounter to spark debate and inquiries.

Onassis AiR recently moved to the Onassis Stegi neighborhood where – more open and welcoming than ever – it is seeking to become a meeting point for both established and emerging artists. Walking down Leontiou Street in Neos Kosmos, the area Onassis Stegi calls home, you might catch Prodromos Tsinikoris behind a laptop preparing his latest project, Euripides Laskaridis rehearsing in the hall next door, or Moriah Evans trying out a dance move or improvising a monologue in the yard. From Thanasis Deligiannis to Marina Gioti, from Odydoze and Nikos Karathanos to Chrysanthi Koumianaki and Sister Sylvester, artists of every generation from across the planet comprise this dynamic artistic community.

During the 2022/23 season, Onassis AiR will be supporting 70 artists and arts practitioners via its Tailor-Made Fellowships program, which adopts an open-ended format and adapts to the specific research needs of each participant.

From September 2022 through July 2023, Onassis AiR is honoring its existing partnerships and supporting the members of the broader Onassis Foundation ecosystem through the Tailor-Made Fellowships program: a series of individual research fellowships offering time and space, as well as a series of professional development workshops and seminars, including skill-sharing and constructive feedback sessions between participants, tours and research trips, and exchanges with other local and international organizations and arts professionals. On Friday, September 30, from 19:00 through 22:00, the new Onassis AiR space in Neos Kosmos is opening its doors to the general public for the first time with a whimsical Open Day, the first in a series of public events to be held throughout the year, and featuring the Onassis AiR alumni who are coming back to join the program for a second time.

After all, Onassis AiR is a program grounding its mission on the ongoing support of artistic research and practice – a program that’s constantly evolving, and ever keeping artists at its core. Onassis Artists-in-Residence (AiR) are exponents of contemporary culture, travelers reaching various destinations around the globe. They spark human curiosity, read and get inspired, gather experiences and create, and all the while make the local global and the global local.

From September 2019 until today, Onassis AiR has been working closely with program participants to institute a different culture of being and working imbued with the values of coexistence and collaboration. Our aim is to create a space where artists and art workers can set themselves the conditions for the development of their work. In the aftermath of the pandemic and of the major social and political changes happening in the world, Onassis AiR poses one question: how do we stay relevant to the needs of our artistic community?

The participants of the Tailor-Made Fellowships program that were selected via open calls put out in past years are: Noor Abed, Yota Argyropoulou, Margarita Athanasiou, Orestis Athanasopoulos, Tristan Bera, Khaleb Brooks, Federica Bueti, Nuno Cassola, Marianna Christofides, Stavros Chrysafidis, Marc Delalonde, Anastasia Diavasti, Dennis Dizon, Bryony Dunne, Alkisti Efthymiou, Moriah Evans, Ryan Ferko, Dorota Gawęda & Eglė Kulbokaitė, Danai Giannoglou, Marina Gioti, Arshia Fatima Haq, Samuel Hertz, Julian Hetzel, Daniel Hui, Stella Ioannidou, Laure Jaffuel, Christina Kotsilelou, Chrysanthi Koumianaki, Vishal Kumaraswamy, Latent Community (Sotiris Tsiganos & Ionian Bisai), Joey Lubitz, Marina Miliou-Theocharaki, Harry Isra Muhammad, Inés Muñozcano, Aslı Özdoyuran, Kenneth Pietrobono, Margarita Pita, Paz Ponce, Theo Prodromidis, Will Rawls, Miriam Simun, Sumugan Sivanesan, Lito Skopeliti, Felipe Steinberg, Prodromos Tsinikoris, Kostas Tsioukas, Nikolas Ventourakis, Amanda Vincelli, Lydia Xynogala, and Ioanna Zouli.

Onassis AiR

Onassis AiR sprang from a partnership forged between two core pillars of the Onassis Foundation: Onassis Culture and Onassis Education. Taking the provision of access to the benefits of healthcare, learning, and culture – to as many people as possible – as its core mission, the Onassis Foundation has provided ongoing support for education, with 7,500 scholarships awarded for doctoral and post-graduate studies undertaken in Greece and around the world, and across a broad range of research interests, thus investing in all those who think with curiosity. Alongside this, more than 1,000 artists are unleashing their potential with the support of the Onassis Foundation, receiving scholarships to do so. Furthermore, more than 80 Onassis Stegi productions are now touring internationally, presenting the best possible version of Greece to the world. Three years ago, this ever-active Foundation took its support for artists and their needs to the next level by launching Onassis AiR (Artists-in-Residence) – a program in constant flux, much like the creative ferment of the artistic community.
