Fran Lebowitz says exactly what’s on her mind. The unconventional New York writer and critic, now more widely known in Greece thanks to Martin Scorsese’s Netflix documentary series “Pretend It’s a City,” visits the Onassis Stegi to engage in an unpredictable discussion with the Onassis Foundation’s Director of Culture, Afroditi Panagiotakou.

If New York City were a woman, it would be Fran Lebowitz. Unconventional, witty, and armed with wry humor, she is a voracious chain smoker and reader, but also a writer suffering – by her own admission –from a writer’s block over the past few decades; an associate of Andy Warhol (whom she never really liked); and together a provocative and fractious figure, Lebowitz talks about the contemporary international cultural landscape, everyday life in the world’s metropolises, and the importance of being yourself at the present time.

Fran Lebowitz is a “child” of New York City, but her deeds exceed the city limits by far. This might be due to the success of her books “Metropolitan Life” (1978) and “Social Studies” (1981), which made her very famous in 1970s America, or thanks to Martin Scorsese’s Netflix series “Pretend It’s a City” (2021).

She started out as a columnist for Andy Warhol’s “Interview” magazine, and gradually became the “voice” of the city: the person who speaks her mind with a sharp eye and tongue-in-cheek prose, about all that troubles the residents of New York City; and the person who sheds light on America’s current affairs, from an honest and not-so-politically-correct point of view. She soon settled into her typical androgynous attire, wearing identical clothes and accessories: her blue jeans, cowboy boots, a white shirt and a blazer or coat (depending on the city’s weather conditions) turned her into a recognizable symbol over the last five decades.

Urban Coolness and the Importance to Speak your Mind

When Fran Lebowitz meets the Director of Culture at the Onassis Foundation, Afroditi Panagiotakou, no one knows what the evening will bring. Besides, in her own words, “[t]he opposite of talking isn’t listening. The opposite of talking is waiting.” And we are holding our breath as we wait for her arrival.
