Three exceptional premieres curated by Dimitris Papadimitriou

The Onassis Channel is hosting three exceptional premieres curated by Dimitris Papadimitriou. On Saturday, April 30, we’re taking a journey into the historic past, with music and the Greek revolutionary poetry of 1821 as our vehicle. And on Thursday, May 1, two pieces composed by the great provocateur that is Dimitris Papadimitriou are set to premiere back-to-back, in partnership with the Athens State Orchestra. A Hellenic Project and Onassis Stegi co-production.

Poets of 1821 set to music by young Greek Composers

Dionysios Solomos – Andreas Kalvos – Lord Byron: a contemporary take on the heroic poetic past.

On Saturday, April 30, we’re taking a journey into the historic past with music and poetry as our vehicle, through pieces composed by Constantinos Evangelidis, Giorgos Kassavetis, and Angelos Theodorakis – all on the Onassis Channel on YouTube. This concert forms part of the Contemporary Music and Poetry Cycle, co-produced by the Hellenic Project and Onassis Stegi.

The Hellenic Project, under the artistic direction of Dimitris Papadimitriou, continues to support fresh works of Greek songwriting, commissioning young artists to compose original pieces. The Contemporary Music and Poetry Cycle provides a platform for new songs commissioned from both established and emerging composers. It presents new series of songs inspired by poetic texts drawn from the international literary canon, on themes selected by the Hellenic Project.

A major event of historic importance for the Greek world – with a focus here on its poetic dimensions, with past truths captured by iconic historical poems – is made a musical reality in the present day and brought to the fore in ways that spring, unconstrained, from genuine feeling.

“Concerto for Piano & Orchestra” & “Symphonic Miniatures”

On Sunday, May 1, the composer Dimitris Papadimitriou presents the world first performance of his “Concerto for Piano & Orchestra No. 1” – with Titos Gouvelis, George Petrou, and the Athens State Orchestra – on the Onassis Channel on YouTube, as it was recorded and filmed on the Aristotle Onassis Main Stage at Onassis Stegi, with the entire production overseen by the composer himself.

This will be followed by a select cross-section of works by this great provocateur, including his “ Dream Errants” Symphonic Miniatures and other Symphonic Monographs, all conducted by the talented maestro that is George Petrou

Pieces included:

  • Incompleteness
  • Painting Soundtracks – Jackson Pollock
  • Sparkling Bicycles
  • The Rope Walkers
  • Diabolic Fortune-teller
  • White Nights

An elegy on loneliness and the colossal inner struggles faced by contemporary humankind.

“The Symphonic Miniatures were born in the flashes of mental disobedience, anarchy, and rebellion I experience when composing some other unrelated, long, and time-consuming work,” Dimitris Papadimitriou notes. “They’re fragments of thwarted desires that stow themselves away inside unrelated compositions, and grab hold of you in your sleep.”

Since the term “symphonic music” usually refers to large-scale musical compositions for orchestra, and thus to works of extended duration, the composer’s concept for his Symphonic Miniatures – that is, short-form and smaller-scale music for large orchestral ensembles – constituted an invitation and a challenge to create outside classical forms.

The two Symphonic monographs (Incompleteness, Pollock) are single-section, free-standing pieces that each develop a specific theme. In this instance, Gödel’s mathematical theorems, and the way in which the abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock painted his works.

All these pieces feature on a new worldwide release by the German label MDG, recorded for Super Audio CD – a recording that plays sound back in three dimensions. The CD also plays exceptionally well in a standard stereo system. The album is available to buy in Greece from the OPERA ART classical music record shop (on Akadimias Street, inside the old Greek National Opera arcade).
