The Contemporary Family: What does it mean to be a parent today?
Onassis Channel digital premiere: 14.07.2021 at 12:00 (UTC +2)
New parents. Not necessarily because they’re young, but also because they are parents in new ways. Modern parents, parents in new, different family forms that the progress of science and society has allowed to emerge. What does it mean to be a parent today? The discussion that will soon take place at Onassis Stegi attempts to answer this question.

Single parents, gay parents, adoptive parents, parents thanks to egg or sperm donation. One could call all these new forms of parenthood alternative, running the risk to exclude them, to set them apart, to emphasize their differences, while in fact all families are – and should be – different. From the times of our parents or grandparents, when only one family structure was acceptable, and raising children was considered to be as expected and easy as breathing, to our days, when science and society have allowed for the emergence of new parenthood types, while there is also an exhaustive listing of the right moves, thoughts, opinions about parenting. How important is the concept of biologicality, after all? Are our children ever really “ours”? Is there such a thing as a perfect parent? Stegi invites six parents to discuss modern parenthood and what it means to be a parent today.
A series of online discussions focusing on Greek society
Citizens share their experiences, without any censorship. Members of active organizations, individuals from the academic and the art communities, from the fields of activism and civil society, journalists, researchers, law and governance experts, people from diverse ethnicities and communities of Athens, take a personal stand on the issues that are brought forward through the debate.
These deep and genuine discussions highlight key aspects of our social life, in an open digital platform promoting conversations and fruitful debates. This is the intention of the ‘Society Uncensored’ series, created for a multitude of ‘voices’ to be heard, aiming at diverse – and even marginalized or ambivalent – views to be spread, enhancing reflection and awareness on ubiquitous social issues, which emerge through the current events, the public debates at social media and the press, as well as our own daily life.
