Episode #4: Mike Davis – Covid-19, The Avian Flu and Other Monsters
In this episode of The Archipelago, recorded deep in the second wave of the Covid-19 global pandemic, Mike Davis talks about the present and future of global pandemics, the tectonic shifts shaking US politics and the importance of preserving the memory of the movements in 1960s Los Angeles, as documented in his latest book “Set the Night on Fire,” co-authored with Jon Wiener.
In his 2005 book “The Monster at the Door,” Mike Davis, the prolific author of widely-read classics such “City of Quartz,” “Planet of Slums,” and “Late Victorian Holocausts,” having studied the mutations of flu outbreaks predicted that in the future, a new strain of avian flu would unleash a global pandemic that governments, healthcare systems and the pharmaceutical industry would be ill-equipped to handle.
