Christos Xanthis
Co-Founder of Corsmed
Dr Christos Xanthis completed his graduate studies at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace, and his post-graduate studies at Imperial College, London. He holds a PhD from the University of Thessaly (Simulation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, 2014). In 2015 he was post-doctoral researcher at Lund University, Sweden, at the Department of Clinical Sciences of Lund University Hospital. In 2017, he co-founded a spin-off, startup company in Sweden, which today features among the 33 most innovative startup enterprises there.
As a researcher, he has worked on innovative ideas concerning the use of MRI simulations in research, education, and diagnosis. He envisioned the development of an on-demand, high-performance simulation MRI engine through cloud computing in order to: promote MRI research to a wider scientific public; to improve MRI education for doctors and technologists; and to improve the clinical experience and diagnostic value of MRI in order to benefit patients and health providers.
Through his expertise and professional experience, he was able to detect a gap and a business opportunity in the MRI market. As a result, in 2017 he established the Swedish company Corsmed, a spin-off company of Lund University. Corsmed’s objectives were based on his research at the Department of Clinical Sciences of Lund University. He currently coordinates the development of products and services of the company, and is actively engaged in its strategic planning.
Corsmed’s main commercial product is a “flight-simulator” for MRI: in other words, an advanced platform where its users can run a simulated MRI from any computer, offering unlimited educational possibilities with significantly reduced cost. The expensive cost of actual MRIs reduces the user’s access to training and education, even though MRI training requires practical experience. Corsmed aims at shaping a more efficient educational system for MRI so that patients across the globe receive continuous, high-end care regardless of the technologist operating the MRI and the radiologist making the diagnosis.
After 3+ years of participating in the international startup scene, Corsmed recently featured among the 33 most innovative, newly formed startup businesses in Sweden. It was chosen from over 400 technology companies created in the last seven years, using their own technological innovation and having international business potential. Today Corsmed employs personnel in Greece, Sweden, and Portugal. Active in markets in Europe, North America and the Middle East, Corsmed’s development has been remarkably rapid.
