Emi Miyoshi: S_HE IS SEA

For her next project, entitled “S_HE IS SEA,” Emi Miyoshi explores the question of whether the uncontrollable states and idiosyncratic occurrences of the intangible phenomenon of adaptation can be deliberately created, challenged, directed, and then consciously deployed with and against each other.

This question automatically entails an examination of the supposed ambivalence of chaos and order. Emi Miyoshi uses dance improvisation techniques to explore choreographic notations based on the music theory of polyrhythms. The project focuses on rhythms in the body and explores how to incorporate rhythms and movements that arise intuitively into a structured score to create a landscape of an internal organism. The body is always subject to external (social) and internal (biological) patterns, cycles, and regularities, which in “S_HE IS SEA” will be investigated and at the same time dissolved into asymmetry.

In this way, each dancer’s own inner rhythms are highlighted and potentially thrown into chaos. The goal is to focus on individual decision-making processes as if through a burning glass, and to exploit the possibilities of a newly emerging polyrhythmic and dynamic space that follows its own laws.

The project “S_HE IS SEA” creates a polyrhythmic space in which chaos and order are balanced. How can decision-making processes in dance be directed, controlled, or even dissolved into chaos as an immediate and invisible current? “S_HE IS SEA” invites the viewer to question patterns of order and gives insights into a space that follows its own rhythms and rules, in which it is necessary to situate oneself anew.

Emi Miyoshi is accompanied by Theater Freiburg, as part of the Grand Luxe Network, for the season 2022-23.

Onassis Stegi’s participation in the network is developed as part of its Outward Turn Program initiatives.
