#thehead | Zéte

Performance, Installation, Digital Video

Description

The project #thehead | Zéte is based on Panos Sklavenitis’s ongoing research on masquerade and the carnivalesque. The performance and installation draw on customs of Ioannina, the region of Epirus, and the Balkans. Existing and fabricated narratives intertwine and give shape and substance to a collective performance led by a heterogeneous crowd. Zoomorphic and phytomorphic costumes, as well as polyphonic singing, dominate this performance, building the feeling of celebrating an inclusive world with different temporalities, materials, and approaches. The project opens a dialogue with tradition while deploying artificial intelligence.

The work is commissioned by Onassis Stegi for the “Plásmata ΙΙ: Ioannina” exhibition.

The #thehead | Zéte performance is founded on an ongoing research by Panos Sklavenitis around the notion of disguise and the carnivalesque. Bearing references to tradition, as well as imaginary and contemporary elements, the performance will activate the eponymous installation, giving way to a collective performance by a heterogeneous crowd. Zoomorphic and phytomorphic disguises, movements, and actions both customary and extraordinary shall extend an invitation to the visitors of the exhibition and the residents of Ioannina to a special inclusive celebration.
