Where does a stairway lead when it no longer exists?

The pre-modern technology of the wall is the liminal framework between the lake and the city. The wall does not function as a separator but as a unifying element. This stairway is one of the many that connected the upper world of the castle with the lower world of the lake. Its uselessness to humans and their machines does not make it any less functional. The plants that embrace it, the insects that burrow into it, and the birds that climb it without using it are unimpeachable witnesses to this fact.
