Mycelium Network
Installation, living sculpture, video (no sound)
Description
Mushrooms live in the dark. Abandoned mines, humid basements, or bunkers from long past wars offer the ideal conditions for the cultivation of these ‘creatures’ that build their own kingdom. Fungi have the ability to break down anything organic and feed on the energy stored in organic matter, as well as absorb minerals from the rocks. In the shelter of the old castle, several clusters of mycelia produce fruiting bodies forming a living sculptural installation that changes from one day to the next. Six species are cultivated and hosted, with five of these being edible and the sixth an extremely potent mushroom with medicinal properties.
The sculpture was adapted for the “Plásmata II: Ioannina” exhibition.
